Polar Bears and Global Warming

Winston of Churchill: One Bear's Battle Against Global Warming

Have you read Jean Davies Okimoto's book Winston of Churchill: One Bear's Battle Against Global Warming?  It is a Green Earth Book Award winning book written in 2007 about one bear's determination to save the ice.  The bear's name is Winston and he is from a town called Churchill.  The book relates the bear to the historical figure Winston Churchill, having the same characteristics and imitating some of his actions.  I enjoyed reading this book and think that it is a great reference for children.  If you are planning to teach a unit on global warming and the effects it has on the polar bears, this book could be used either in the beginning before any material has been covered to capture the students attention, or in the end to close out the unit.  There is another book that is mentioned in the end of Okimoto's book which I have not gotten the chance to read.  You may want to check this one out as well.  It is Why Are the Ice Caps Melting?  The Dangers of Global Warming by Anne Rockwell.  Please feel free to post your opinions about either book on my blog.  There is much debate about the effects of global warming and what we are really doing to contribute to it, but my opinion is we better be safe than sorry.  Why not take some steps to help our planet?
